Atlanta police had a chase covered by land, air and sea as officers swam a lake to pursue a suspect this week.
The incident happened Sunday after officers spotted a car that had been reported stolen, according to an online post by the Atlanta Police Department. Initially, the driver was able to elude police, but the department's Aviation Unit was called in, and the car was located and tracked by air.
Eventually, the driver got out of the car and fled into a forested area around Tatum Lake. From there, he jumped into the lake and swam away from police.
Officers on shore quickly removed their gear and followed the suspect into the water. They finally were able to reach the suspect before he could make it to land.
The man was arrested and charged with reckless driving, fleeing and eluding, theft by receiving stolen vehicle and other counts. The suspect also had one outstanding warrant stemming from a 2017 murder charge involving gun violence and another for cruelty to children.
"This was yet another significant arrest by team APD," the department stated. "The city is safer with this dangerous suspect off the streets."
"Notice to criminals: If you come to this city to commit a crime, understand that by air, land, and water, APD officers will use every resource to track you down and arrest you," the department added.
